New Alternator and New Battery...For What reason is the Battery is NOT charging?

85 Astro Van, carbureted with no electronic feedback or O2 will not charge the battery. Just put a new battery and alternator in and the battery is still not charging. There are only 4 wires...what could the problem be?...any ideas??
