How do I identify and control an obssession, a strong urge for something not specified?

Have you ever felt like you desperately need something and you don't know what it is? My shrink called it an obssession, the widespread expression "desire" in psychitic speaking. It's a psychologic feature that makes you desperately "thirsty" for something that is encovered in your uncounscious mind.
